Mortimer Football Club was one of the earliest sports clubs in the village of Mortimer, Berkshire. A football team in Mortimer was in existence before the First World War when the playing in what was then called "The Wednesday League".
The current Mortimer FC was founded in 1934. Originally known as Mortimer Garth FC, it has its original in the Garth Club in St John Road, which had been established in 1915 by Miss Bertha Capron in memory of her nephew who was killed in World War One.
An early photograph from a local paper at the time shows the team from 1935/36 as well as Bertha Capron, who was then the Club President.
Mortimer Garth FC met with considerable success during the 1930s and Bertha Capron achieved national recognition as an honorary member of the Berkshire & Buckinghamshire Football Association.
Mortimer Garth amalgamated with Mortimer mens Club (Sunday) in around 1972, and formed the modern club that is Mortimer FC.
The Villagers started to see success towards the end of the 1970s, and as a Founder Member, the club dominated the Reading Football League for periods of the 80s and 90s. The won senior cups and 4 league titles, as well as two Berks & Bucks Trophies under the guidance of Geoff Howell and Mickey Hastings.
Mortimer has had a youth section for many years; the photograph above shows the Basingstoke Sunday League winning team in 1972/72, and is notable as it shows a 13 year old Adrian Keep, who went on to play at senior level and was the club's President for many years.
More recently our U11's won the BYDL Trophy in 2021/22 and U14s were EBFA Div 7 Champions in 24/25.
We have a growing youth section once again this year and will have at least 3 youth teams competing in 25/26.
For the last fifty years the club's senior team has been a constant fixture in the top divisions of what is now the Thames Valley League, only moving to the Hellenic League in 2023/24.
Mortimer FC play home games at the Alfred Palmer Memorial Field on West End Road. This was established in 1939 in memory of Alfred Palmer by his family for the benefit or residents of Mortimer and Wokefield, and Mortimer FC has had its home there since then. Mortimer FC is very grateful to the Trustees of the AMPF for their continued support.
